Brush Strokes

Creative AI needs to be designed around artists, not the research community.

The AI research community is constantly creating ever more and more impressive generative AI models.

But these models follow a trajectory that involves papers and datasets, instead of creative design needs.

Brush Strokes was an attempt to create an artist centric AI tool using simple generative models. My main thesis was this: “Animators don’t want to type stuff, they want to draw.” Therefore, brush strokes became a sort of animation auto complete tool where the artist can quickly sketch what pose they want, and where. The AI then does the rest.

Numerous interface and output approaches were developed and tested. We settled on tensorflow-js approach with a watercolor shader to give us a nice visual effect, the ease of using and web interface, and a speedy inference time.
